ILLiad is the electronic system you use to request an item through Interlibrary Loan. The name ILLiad can be thought of as an acronym for InterLibrary Loan internet accessible database.
Some people might find it troublesome to have to log into ILLiad using a username and password. We believe this is less trouble than traditional paper and electronic systems which require you to enter your personal information with each new request.
Your username and password allows us to give you secure access to information about your interlibrary loan requests. We can also enable you to edit your personal information such as your address or phone number.
Your username can be anything you like, such as your name, abbreviations, or an alphanumeric code. Your password also can be anything you like. We recommend that you follow good security practice and choose a password that is different from those you use to access other systems. However, no one but you will know your password, not even the library staff. The password you set is stored in an encrypted file.
In the event that you forget your password, please stop by the Interlibrary Loan Office and present your current LOBO ID Card, or send us an e-mail at libill@unm.edu. We can then give you a temporary password allowing you access to ILLiad. Please change your temporary password once you logon to ILLiad.
You need a Web browser that can handle forms, tables, and, preferably, one that can handle frames. We recommend either Netscape Navigator version 3.0 or greater or Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 or greater. Both browsers are available for the Windows 3.x, Windows 95 or NT, and Macintosh O/S operating systems. Netscape Navigator is available for UNIX.
Yes. Web browsers cache information and create a history file on the local workstation. This allows a subsequent user of the workstation to access the system under your name using the browser's Back button to recall a page from the cache, or by finding a page with your personal information in the browser's history file. If you are concerned about the security of your interlibrary loan requests, you can take the following steps:

From time to time we purge older records from ILLiad. Our policy is to keep requests online for several years order to comply with record keeping requirements of the copyright law.
Many libraries ship photocopies of articles to us in electronic format. In the past we printed these articles before delivering them to you. Now, through ILLiad, we are able to offer you the option of electronic delivery of these articles in PDF format (Adobe's Portable Document Format).
Why does my browser say that you're sending a cookie? What's in it?
The Active Server Pages technology that we use to provide live reporting for the web sends a Session ID to be stored on your machine. You can refuse this cookie and still be able to use the ILL web pages and ILLiad without any problems.
We now ask for your UNM NetID. This way we have no need to ask for your Social Security number.
We have been doing this for 6 years. It cuts down on processing time and has proven to be very cost-effective for us. This does mean that you must keep your mailing address current on your ILLiad account.
Academic libraries that we normally work with do not, as we have discovered over the years, loan these out. Entire issues of journals are not replaceable if lost, and most libraries do not actively collect videos and textbooks. Videos and textbooks should be purchased if you really need them.
Ten working days (about two weeks) has been our average turnaround time for the last two years. Articles usually arrive faster than books. Always request materials well before they are needed. Once the other library has mailed the book, it is in the hands of the Post Office and we have no control over how long it takes.
The loan period is always set by the lending library. We also must allow time for it to return to them in the mail. We will always try to give you as long a loan period as possible.
Overdue books are billed if you do not respond to the reminder notices. The minimum charge is $75, which breaks down to a minimum $50 replacement cost and a $25 fine and processing fee. If the book is returned, we waive the replacement cost and leave only the $25 fee. The book will actually be billed at a higher rate if the lending library charges us more than $50 for it. The way to avoid all this unpleasantness, of course, is to return the material on time.
No. These requests will be returned unfilled. We only request materials that are not in the UNM collection. If the book is checked out, you must recall it at the Circulation Desk.
Yes. Be sure that you have filled out a "search card" at the circulation desk first. Then tell us that you have done this in the "Notes" box on the request form. The Circulation staff will continue to search for it, even after we have borrowed it.
